Alzheimer's Association
Partnership with The Western Carolinas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association
The Ivey is proud to have as one of its partners the Western Carolinas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. The chapter serves nearly 80,000 families in the Piedmont and western regions of the state who have loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
In Mecklenburg County alone, the estimated number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is about 10,000. Alzheimer’s disease is the fourth leading cause of death overall in Mecklenburg County and the third for women, making this partnership even more important. Our close relationship includes a wide range of services that can
benefit you.
The Alzheimer's Association maintains a SouthPark office and volunteer recruitment center at The Ivey. It's an additional location for families who call the Alzheimer’s Association 24-hour helpline (1-800-272-3900) to go for in-person support and information. We also provide on-the-job training for Alzheimer's Association volunteers. Stop by and get involved!
Together, we offer:
Programs and Services
- Health and wellness fairs.
- Memory screenings and consultations with area physicians.
- Family care consultations and meetings with other area service providers who can assist caregivers and families.
Outreach and Advocacy
- Together, both groups work to raise awareness about the impact of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, the importance of increased research to find a cure, and education about the importance of early diagnosis and better treatment options to stop the progression of the disease.
- The groups advocate together on federal, state and local levels to insure that public officials
understand all issues related to caring for persons with dementia, supporting caregivers, and
finding a cure.
Research Support
- Local researchers conduct medical and social clinical trials related to Alzheimer's disease at The Ivey. The Alzheimer's Association assists in recruiting interested participants to volunteer for these clinical trials.
Respite Care and Adult Day Care / Joint Fundraising
- The Alzheimer's Association and The Ivey are seeking grants that will provide funding, based on financial need, for persons with dementia to attend The Ivey and take advantage of its services.
- We’re also seeking grants to provide funding for transportation for those who receive adult day care services at The Ivey, and for caregivers and families attending educational programs and social events at The Ivey.
